Cross-cultural Issues in your Personal Life

One of my specialties is cultural competence in psychological evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.   Many of my clientele are cross-cultural couples and individuals from other countries.

M
y work in cultural competence also includes disability issues. In particular, I work with both adults and with parents of deaf/hard of hearing children to help them adjust to hearing loss.

I have provided professional training on cultural competence to both colleagues and students, including:
  • A Culturally Competent Approach to Psychosocial Evaluation & Differential Diagnosis, presented to the Philadelphia Society for Clinical Psychologists (PSCP)
  • A Clinical & Culturally Sensitive Approach to Differential Diagnosis of Mental Health Problems in the Elderly: Dementia, Depression, & Delirium, posted on HealthForum Online.
  • Cross-Cultural Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Science, Temple University School of Medicine
  • Multicultural Competence, Psychology Department, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM)

At Philadelphia's Family Court, I created new written Guidelines for the court-ordered Behavioral Health Evaluations (BHEs), with an emphasis on cultural diversity and developmental considerations.  I subsequently conducted training workshops attended for psychologist and psychiatrist evaluators, also attended by members of the Judiciary, Public Defender Association, District Attorney's office, and DHS.
